Fictitious project of a website

Let us take the example of a client who does not have a website. However, he already has 50 pages of content (texts, images, etc.) which are ready to be integrated into its future monolingual website. He also wishes to be able to easily manage the content once it is online. The estimation will depend mainly of the following tasks:

  • Project management: Communications, meetings (over a 2 month period) and establishment of the specifications: 40 hours.
  • Information architecture planning (content organization, navigation, etc.): 30 hours.
  • Website graphical design: 30 hours.
  • Integration of the website graphical design: 30 hours.
  • Implementation of a content management system (CMS): 20 hours.
  • Entry and integration of the content: 10 hours.
  • Tests of operation: 10 hours.

This corresponds to a total of 170 hours of work, we apply an hourly rate of CHF 120.-, this means that the amount of the estimate approximately is CHF 20,000.- for the creation of a site with a content management system.

In this example, to reduce the cost of his future website, the client may carry out himself the website graphical design and its integration. By doing so and submitting the appropriate content, where applicable, the amount of the estimate would approximately be CHF 13,000.-.

If this project was limited to a website graphical design only, with its integration, the price would approximately be CHF 10,000.-. For example, for a website that is merely an online store (with a graphical design included) costs generally amount to at least CHF 15,000.-.

Finally you should be aware that in the context of multilingual projects, tasks which have the most influence on the price are entering the content and the implementation of the CMS.

Fictitious project of software development

In this example, the client wants an off-line application allowing him to manage the stock of his store. The estimate will depend mainly of the following tasks:

  • Project management: Communications, meetings (over a 3 month period): 40 hours.
  • Project studying (technologies selection, feasibility, etc.) and establishment of the specifications: 40 hours.
  • Interface design: 30 hours.
  • Database architecture: 30 hours.
  • Development: 70 hours.
  • Tests of operation: 30 hours.

This corresponds to a total of 240 hours of work, we apply an hourly rate of CHF 120.-, this means that the amount of the estimate would approximately be CHF 30,000.-.

All software developments do not require a database and development time depends on the complexity of the application to achieve. In the case of this fictitious project, if the client had prepared a database directly usable, the development time would have lasted half the time and thus the price of the estimate would have been around CHF 15,000.-.
